Making Home Wi-Fi Reliable Enough to Actually Work On

When home Wi-Fi was mostly for checking email and streaming a show in the evening, an occasional dead spot was a minor annoyance. Now that the same network carries video meetings, cloud file sync, and everything a household streams at once, a network that mostly works is not good enough. The frustrating part is that the problem is rarely the internet plan you pay for. Far more often it is the network inside your walls, and the fixes have less to do with buying faster hardware than with understanding how the signal actually behaves.

Why one router in the corner is not enough

Most homes run on a single router, and that router usually lives wherever the internet line happens to enter the building, which is often a corner, a closet, or behind a television. Wi-Fi radiates outward from that box in a roughly spherical shape, weakening with distance and with every wall, floor, and large object it passes through. A router shoved in a corner is broadcasting half of its signal straight out into the neighborhood and the yard, wasting it, while the far bedroom sits at the ragged edge of coverage.

This is why the classic dead spot exists: a room that is too far from the router, or separated by too many walls, to get a strong signal. Speed tests taken next to the router look great, which convinces people their internet is fine, while the room where they actually work crawls. The internet connection can be perfect and the experience still poor, because the weak link is the last few metres of wireless between the router and the device.

Placement does more than hardware

Before spending anything, move the router. It sounds too simple to matter, but placement routinely produces bigger gains than a new device would. The goal is to get the router as central and as open as possible.

  • Raise it off the floor; signal spreads better from a shelf than from behind furniture.
  • Move it toward the center of the home rather than an outer wall.
  • Keep it in the open, not inside a cabinet or a media console, which absorb signal.
  • Keep distance from large metal objects, mirrors, and appliances, which block and reflect it.

Water and metal are particularly effective at stopping Wi-Fi, which is why a router next to a refrigerator, a fish tank, or a stack of electronics performs worse than the same router in open air. Even the direction of the antennas matters: coverage is strongest out to the sides of an antenna, so for a two-storey home, angling antennas differently can help the signal reach up and down as well as across.

Understanding the bands your devices use

Modern routers broadcast on at least two frequency bands, and knowing the difference clears up a lot of confusion. The 2.4 gigahertz band travels farther and passes through walls more easily, but it is slower and heavily congested because so many devices and appliances use it. The 5 gigahertz band is much faster but does not reach as far or penetrate walls as well. Newer routers add a 6 gigahertz band that is faster still and, for now, refreshingly uncrowded, though its range is the shortest of all.

The practical consequence is that the best band depends on where a device sits. A laptop in the same room as the router should be on the fast 5 or 6 gigahertz band. A smart sensor in the garage is better served by the longer reach of 2.4 gigahertz. Many routers handle this automatically under a single network name, but when a device stubbornly clings to a slow, distant connection, knowing that the bands behave differently helps you understand what is happening rather than assuming the whole network is broken.
